Dylan, from the western Illinois town of Geneseo, is just like many 7-year-olds in his love for dinosaurs, volcanoes, and trucks. But he battles a life-threatening medical condition that no child should have to face. He was diagnosed with lymphoid leukemia, a type of cancer that starts from the white blood cells. Despite his diagnosis, this adventurous boy has not let cancer dampen his spirit. After being referred to Make-A-Wish® Illinois, Dylan wished to travel to Hawaii to see a real volcano!
In collaboration with Make-A-Wish® Hawaii, Dylan was off to the Big Island! Alongside his parents and older sister, Jenseny, this special Wish Family enjoyed an action-packed adventure on Hawaii Island where they saw the majestic beauty of a real volcano in person! They took a ride in a helicopter, courtesy of Sunshine Helicopters, and got to experience a traditional Hawaiian luau with the Island Breeze Laua on the island's sunny side of Kailua-Kona.
Wrapped in the island's natural beauty and welcomed by the community's Aloha Spirit, this trip gave Dylan and his family a break from their routine and allowed them to bond over new adventures. Dylan was able to wash his hand of cancer and “bury” it in Hawaii. Now, he says the cancer is "too far away and won’t come back," symbolizing a turning point in Dylan's journey.
Recently, Dylan celebrated his seventh birthday with none other than a luau party! The memories of his Hawaiian adventure continue to put a smile on his face to this day.
