When 7-year-old Ewa Beach wish kid Keanu landed in Las Vegas with his mother and sister over Mother’s Day weekend, there was only one thing on his mind: reuniting with his grandmother. It had been five years since he’d last seen Lisa, whom he affectionately calls Lola, in person. And though they video chat and talk on the phone often, Keanu dreamed of giving his Lola a hug—of spending quality time together and making new memories.
“His grandmother is his everything,” says wish mom Chevis. She describes how seeing Keanu run into his grandmother’s arms “with so much joy” is an image she’ll cherish forever. In addition to Keanu’s battle with a kidney disease, Lola has been facing medical challenges of her own recently, so it meant the world for the family to be able to come together once again.
“Seeing her touched all our hearts. We are all so happy to have gotten to spend some time with her, and we pray one day she will move back to Oahu,” says Chevis.
While in Las Vegas, the family enjoyed a number of activities together, but among their favorites was a family portrait session—a lasting reminder of their time together and Keanu’s wish come true.
“The wish definitely meant the world to him and his family,” Keanu’s wish granters, Kevin and Jenelyn, explain. “To be able to spend time together as a family is truly priceless. These are moments that can be treasured for a lifetime.”
Experiencing the love of his grandmother in person has benefited Keanu in so many ways, but for Chevis the most important is seeing him happy.
Says Chevis, “The joy in his heart is always the best medicine for the body.”
Kevin and Jenelyn also view the wish as a significant step along Keanu’s medical journey: “Keanu is our little angel who is strong and courageous—more than what we could ever be. We were blessed to be able to help him in his healing process by taking his mind off his treatments and illness for that moment.”
As for Grandma Lola? She’s incredibly thankful for the opportunity to have had this time with her grandson. “Thank you for taking care of my family and making my grandson feel so special,” she says. “You truly grant wishes and bring joy to so many lives!”

According to Kevin and Jenelyn, volunteering with Make-A-Wish Hawaii is a “humbling and rewarding experience.” They explain, “It truly brought us to a place of gratitude to be able to help others fulfill a dream of theirs, as well as to find our own purpose in life. If people are looking for their calling, being wish granters is one way they can serve with purpose.”
