Local boy Felix, from Molokai, was given an epic birthday gift – in fact it wasn’t just a gift, it was a wish.
Battling Hereditary Progressive Muscular Dystrophy, Felix faces continued muscle weakness and the loss of muscle mass. It was a diagnosis that no parent would ever expect, but instead of worrying about the future and the challenges that may come with it, Felix and his parents decided to live in the moment and take hold of a great opportunity that had come their way.
Walt Disney World was Felix’s number one wish, but he got much more than just a week of fun at the famous theme park. His wish adventure started out with a plane ride from Molokai to Oahu to attend a party at Dave & Buster’s set up just for him! After having a blast and winning thousands of tickets, Felix and his family has the privilege of staying over at the Sheraton Waikiki for a night of luxury. Tomorrow would be the start of part 2 of his exciting wish journey.
The next day, Felix and his family hopped on a plane all the way to Orlando, Florida. Before take-off Felix was lucky enough to be invited into the pilot's cockpit! In that moment, his mellow mood turned into pure excitement! He realized that this was more than just a trip, it was an event that was all about him. It was the first time Felix flew across the pacific to the mainland, and the second flight of his life! Needless to say, the excitement and anticipation for his final destination was building with every hour on board.
Finally, they arrived. And the first stop was Give Kids the World Village – the ultimate resort for kids. Felix would soon find that this place was his favorite part of his entire experience. There was a game room, endless ice cream and as much pizza as he wanted! Not to mention the daily activities that were beyond awesome!
“Give Kids the World had so many activites. There was so much to do, we just didn’t have time to do it all", said Felix's mom, Cheri.
Felix’s favorite activity brought him back to his roots living on Molokai. The rodeo experience was something familiar to Felix and he even got to meet 25 National Cowgirls!
During another activity, he met the famous Blue Angel Pilots, taking his wish to new heights. Some of his other favorites from the trip were meeting Mickey Mouse at Walt Disney World, seeing the penguins at SeaWorld and just hanging out at the pool at Give Kids the World Village.
“The trip was fun packed all the way", Cheri continued. Felix had such a good time, he still asks his mom when they are going to go back. “It was a once in a lifetime kind of trip. It made him feel very special. Everything was awesome. He turned 10 on his trip and it was the best birthday present he could have got. We are so grateful for you guys. We made so many good memories.“
Felix came home with countless new experiences and a new perspective. For those 10 days, all his worries were gone, and all he could do was smile. Today, he and his family look back on the joyful memories they made on his wish and his 10th birthday, and are reminded of a time they felt a joy so powerful that their world, even with all its challenges, looked brighter and more hopeful than before.
