Boy with leukemia to experience WWII Survival Wish in Hawaii, thanks to Make-A-Wish Hawaii

Date

February 12, 2013

HONOLULU   A WWII convoy greeting, an overnight bunking on the USS Missouri, survival training from the U.S. Air Force and a military air transport to a deserted beach are all part of the dream Make-A-Wish® Hawaii is granting a little boy with cancer February 15 and 16 on Oahu, Hawaii. Carl, an 11-year-old boy from Millcreek, Washington, who has been diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (“ALL”) loves the outdoors, World War II history and military aircraft.

In collaboration with representatives of the U.S. military, our Board of Directors, and local volunteers, Make-A-Wish Hawaii is granting his very special wish: To be an Army Air Corps pilot who gets shot down and survives on a desert island. What an imagination!” said Siana Hunt, Make-A-Wish Hawaii President & CEO. “As part of his amazing weekend, he will don his own custom-made period uniform, receive survival training from the U.S. Air Force, spend the night with other ‘airmen’ on the Battleship USS Missouri, take a VIP tour of Pearl Harbor, and survive overnight on a secluded beach located on the North Shore.”

Carl’s wish will take place February 15 and 16 at various sites around town including the Honolulu Airport, Pearl Harbor, and on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. Schedule with opportunities for media to attend follows at the end of the news release.

Carl has put tons of careful thought, imagination and planning into his special wish. Due to his love of ‘extreme camping’ and WWII history, he’s dreamed up something very special,” Hunt said. “Make-A-Wish Hawaii is working with many branches of the U.S. military to create a magical wish experience for Carl and his family.”

According to the Wish Impact Study in 2011, a wish has been proven to be good medicine—74% of parents saw the wish experience as a positive turning point in the wish child’s battle against their illness.
