For Immediate Release:
HONOLULU (April 18, 2013)
Eleven-year-old Skylar from Makiki is an outgoing, dynamic, big-hearted, young lady who has three qualifying medical conditions that make her eligible for a wish. In her short life, she has endured countless extended stays in various hospitals.
We will be having a surprise wish reveal for Skylar in front of all her friends, her parents, fellow students, teachers and staff members at Maryknoll School. Her wish is to create a fashionable line of sun-safe hats for kids! All students will receive a hat from Skylar’s hat line HiSky.
Due to her recent lupus diagnosis, Skylar must wear a hat at all times including while indoors. Her elementary school made a special uniform exception to allow her to wear a hat in class while following her stringent medical protocol. This got precocious Skylar thinking. What are the benefits of sun safety? How could she change its perception within our community and for kids everywhere? The answer was simple. As a result, her wish to create a fashionable, sun-safe hat and educate other children in Hawaii about the benefits of sun safety has become a real passion. To her, the work of designing hats, creating a business plan, a company logo and footprint in the Honolulu community has been a source of constant excitement and creative self-expression for her.

A wish, like the one we’ve granted Skylar, has been proven to be good medicine—74 percent of parents saw the wish experience as a positive turning point in the wish child’s battle against their illness. Additionally, 81 percent of parents observed an increased willingness by their wish kids to comply with treatment protocols. (Wish Impact Study, 2011).
