June 21, 2017– (Honolulu, Hawaii) – The annual summer campaign to raise funds for the children of Make-A-Wish Hawaii kicked off last week Friday with an all-day televised radiothon called Give Wishes Wings. With a goal of $50,000 to kick off the summer-long campaign, the final count at 7 p.m. announced a grand total of over $60,000. Leading sponsors included Alaska Alrlines and Dave and Busters.
Broadcasted by partners KITV4 and 94.7 KUMU, the radiothon aired heartfelt testimonies by wish families—the children affected by life-changing medical diagnoses and their parents—and encouraged community members to call in and make financial gifts that would be matched dollar-for-dollar by an anonymous donor. Every donation was also supplemented with miles by Alaska Airlines to quite literally make wishes take flight for the 600 wish children actively planning their wish this summer.
“It truly takes each and every one of us to ‘Give Wishes Wings’ for our wish kids in Hawaii,” said Siana Hunt, President and CEO of Make-A-Wish Hawaii. “Nearly 80% of our wish children dream of an experience that requires air travel, to experience a land far away or simply reunite with their family on the mainland. Thanks to our compassionate partners and generous donors, every dollar raised during the campaign kickoff and throughout the summer will help these wishes take flight and inspire wish children to look toward the future with renewed hope and optimism.”
It takes approximately 13 million air miles in a year to send wish children and their families on the trip of their lives, whether it is to experience a new place or reunite with family on the mainland. The organization depends on both donation of miles and funds to reduce the cost of wish trips for children across the island community.
While the radiothon has officially concluded, the summer campaign is in full swing and continues on through the end of August. Donations are welcome at any time and will continue to be matched both dollar-for-dollar and by miles. Visit hawaii.wish.org to make a donation today.
