School is out for summer, which means it is the busiest wish-granting season for Make-A-Wish® Hawaii now that children and their families have time to travel on their wishes. This summer alone, there are more than 500 wishes the Hawaii chapter is actively planning for local keiki and visiting children.
“Wishes to travel are the most popular wishes that we see from children of all ages; More than 80 percent of the wishes by local keiki involve getting on a plane to explore their dream destinations,” said Make-A-Wish Hawaii President and CEO Siana Austin Hunt. “In addition, wishes to visit Hawaii from children worldwide comprise the second-most requested wish trip behind Disney, making us one of the busiest chapters in the country.”
In partnership with KHON2 News and 94.7 KUMU, The Rhythm of Hawaii, Make-A-Wish Hawaii will hit the airwaves with its 2nd annual summertime drive, Give Wishes Wings, on Friday, June 26 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. The goal of this drive, sponsored by Wheels for Wishes, Revolusun, and Dave & Buster’s, is to raise needed funding and air miles to help the chapter’s 500 summer wishes take flight.
Most major airline miles will be accepted, including Alaska Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Airlines, and new this year, Hawaiian Airlines. Donated miles to Make-A-Wish Hawaii will never expire.
“It takes about 13 million air miles in a year to send our wish families on their wishes,” added Hunt. “With summer being the time to travel, this is when we rely on donations to significantly reduce the cost of wish trips.”
As an added incentive, Alaska Airlines will be matching mile donations at a minimum of 1,000 miles, up to 1 million. Those who tune in to the day-long drive could win donated giveaways during “Power Hours” planned for the campaign. Power Hour prizes range from Uber gift cards, Papa John’s Pizza, to a pair of tickets to The Hawaii Bowl!
Last year’s first annual drive raised 1 million air miles and $34,000. Funding and miles donated to the Hawaii chapter stay in Hawaii to support local wish-granting efforts.
