Make-A-Wish® Hawaii, in collaboration with numerous volunteers and organizations, granted Eva’s wish to encounter a magical unicorn at The Royal Hawaiian, a Luxury Collection Resort, on Friday, August 7, bringing a boost of hope, strength and joy in the midst of this three-year-old’s battle with leukemia.
This wish rallied support from more than 40 volunteers who helped bring a fairytale script to life. This script, written by the Make-A-Wish Hawaii team, was inspired by a children’s book called “The Legend of the Hair Fairies,” by Carole Folkert, Eva’s caregiver.
“Eva’s caregiver authored this book about two magical fairies who lose their hair to illness, but they turn this struggle into strength,” said Make-A-Wish Hawaii COO Amy Sterry. “This book speaks to our mission of bringing hope, strength and joy to children battling life-threatening illnesses, and it set the tone for this enchanting wish.”
Among these fairies were about a dozen dancing fairies from the world-renowned Hypersquad Dance Co., who unveiled a special performance upon Eva’s arrival to The Royal Hawaiian’s outdoor Coconut Grove. This outdoor courtyard was transformed into the land of “Wishtopia,” where the fairies tasked Eva with helping their kingdom find Hazel the unicorn, who had vanished.
“Follow us through the enchanted forest and you will see - a tulip, a rose, a sunflower and a butterfly all waiting to be free. Once the flowers are renewed, our unicorn will make its debut,” Eva was told by the Queens, played by Amber Napoleon, Miss America United States, and Liana Wright, Mrs. Hawaii.
Upon completing these tasks, Eva was overjoyed to see a beautiful white unicorn with pink hair, from Paniolo Parties!
“Upon traveling to Hawaii, Eva had no idea that she would actually encounter a unicorn, so her genuine reaction of wonder and joy uplifted everyone involved,” added Sterry.
This wish comes nearly one year to date of Make-A-Wish Hawaii’s first-ever wish granting to see a unicorn, granted to Make-A-Wish recipient Addison in Oahu’s Waimea Valley. This wish captured hearts around the world, and so when Eva’s home chapter of Make-A-Wish Arizona was tasked with searching for a unicorn for Eva, they thought of Hawaii.
“We are honored that our sister chapter entrusted us with bringing Eva’s wish to life,” stated Sterry. “Wishes to come to Hawaii are among the most requested wishes across the Make-A-Wish organization, and so it is a testament to how big of a role our local community has in sharing the power of a wish and spreading aloha to a worldwide audience.”
"Our associates really came together with the many community partners today to make Eva's wish come true in a most heartwarming way," said Kelly Sanders, area managing director, Starwood Hotels & Resorts, Waikiki. "It has truly been our honor and privilege to partner with Make-A-Wish Hawaii and the many wonderful families year after year."
Eva’s special day ended with her family and new friends over high tea at The Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa.
