Make-A-Wish® Hawaii launches June’s “Drive for WISHES!”

Date

June 16, 2014

Location

Honolulu, HI

Key components of June’s month-long fundraising campaign include Star Sales at local retailers, Dishes for WISHES at participating restaurants and a radio telethon at month’s end on 94.7 KUMU

Honolulu, Hawaii – Make-A-Wish® Hawaii launched a month-long fundraising campaign on June 1, to help fund their mission to grant the wish of every eligible child battling a life-threatening medical condition in Hawaii this year. With a record number of referrals from local families and physicians, Make-A-Wish Hawaii will grant wishes to more than 100 Hawaii keiki in 2014, more than double the number of wishes they have granted in any previous year in their 32-year history. Since many local kids’ wishes involve travel to the Mainland, and since Make-A-Wish invites the entire immediate family to participate, wishes can be costly.

As a key component of Drive for WISHES!  Hawaii’s 94.7 KUMU is holding a radio telethon, hitting the airwaves on Friday, June 27 from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Radiothon for WISHES! is one of several signature efforts of Make-A-Wish® Hawaii’s Drive for WISHES! throughout June. The goal of Radiothon for WISHES! is to raise enough money to fund five wishes that originate in Hawaii – five wishes that will bring hope, strength and joy to five local families, and to their community.

Kicking off 94.7 KUMU’s pledge drive will be an “Alaska Power Hour” from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. on June 27. Alaska Airlines will give away two round-trip tickets to anywhere they fly. Pledges of $100 or more during the power hour will qualify listeners for the giveaway. A second “Alaska Power Hour” will close the drive from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Alaska Airlines will also match donations of $100 or more in air miles, to a maximum of one million miles for the day, helping to stem the considerable travel costs for Hawaii families, who often journey to the Mainland to fulfill wishes of all varieties. Pledges can be made by calling the Make-A-Wish® Hawaii office at (808) 537-3118, where volunteers will be ready to take calls throughout the day on June 27.

Partnerships with local restaurants will also help raise funds through Dishes for WISHES, another facet of June’s fundraising efforts. Make-A-Wish is asking restaurants to donate a portion of the proceeds of select menu items throughout the month of June. As an example, every warm Brussels sprouts salad sold at The Grove Kailua during the month of June will help raise funds for wishes.

Local eateries including Kissaten’s Coffee Bar on Piikoi Street, Cinnamon's Cafe, Fleetwood’s on Front Street on Maui, and Big Island Grill in Kailua-Kona will be selling $1 Wish Stars to support the June campaign. Local retailers can lend a hand through Star Sales to their customers, prominently displaying the Wish Stars with Make-A-Wish® supporters’ names on them.
