A Message from Kauai Volunteer Leigh Feutz

I got involved with Make-A-Wish Hawaii about four years ago. At the time, I was working for a company that catered the Make-A-Wish Hawaii Bethany Hamilton Surf Camp on Kauai. The team and I spent three days helping out with catering meals for about seven wish families. The highlight was meeting the Oahu staff, helping out with the surf camp, and meeting an incredible group of wish kids. From that moment, I knew that I wanted to be more involved with Make-A-Wish. I had always been active in community involvement but had yet to find the right group to work with on Kauai. I'm a firm believer of giving back to your community, and Make-A-Wish was a perfect opportunity.

I will tell you that I got more than I bargained for. Every wish kid I have worked with has a story. I've worked with girls and boys, from 2.5 years old up to 18 years old, and the relationships Make-A-Wish develops with the families and the wish kids are incredible.

However, without the generous donations we receive, there would be no Make-A-Wish. In my experience, people enjoy giving. Whether it is a venue to hold a wish reveal, a gift card to purchase an item for an upcoming wish, or airline miles to help wish families travel, every little bit matters. I walked into a specialty balloon shop recently to inquire about a donation for a wish reveal, and the owner said, "I've been waiting for you. I saw a segment on Make-A-Wish and didn't know how I could help. What can I do to make this wish special?" Her generous donation is going to make one incredible little girl very happy.
Even the smallest donations make a difference.  They assist us as wish granters to put smiles on kids’ faces and looks of awe from parents.  They give the family a sense that they are not alone and add to the hopes and dreams they wish for their kids.
My goal is to make sure every kid who qualifies for a wish gets their wish fulfilled. We are able to do this with the help of the community. We are able to do this with donations from businesses and individuals. And we are able to grant these wishes by working with people who want to give their time and energy to gives kids a wish of a lifetime.
