What COVID-19 Means for Wishes

COVID-19 wishes

How the CARES Act Impacts Charitable Giving for 2020:

To help non-profits withstand the economic impacts of COVID-19, the US Government has expanded the charitable deductions for the 2020 tax year:

  • Allows all taxpayers (whether they itemize or not) to deduct up to $300 in cash giving
  • For individuals, raises the cap on annual giving from 60% of adjusted gross income to 100%
  • For corporations, raises the annual limit from 10% to 25% of taxable income

Aloha Wish 'Ohana,

On behalf of our Hawaii wish team, please allow me to express our sincerest concern and gratitude for each of you during this challenging time. We hope you remain healthy and safe while continuing to adapt and adjust each day.

COVID-19 has had a profound impact on our community and, indeed, the world. It has presented financial hardships, disrupted routines, caused fear and uncertainty, not to mention tragedy to the families most deeply affected. In light of the severe health risks posed by COVID-19, and because the health and safety of our wish kids, employees, and community supporters remain our top priority, we have made the difficult decision to postpone all travel wishes and fundraising events. We have also spent the last few weeks developing a strategy and plan on how we’ll navigate this storm together, in partnership with supporters like you.

What this crisis hasn’t taken away, however —and what we know each of you as Make-A-Wish Hawaii supporters believes in—is hope. Hope has always been a core part of our mission as we work to change the lives of our keiki fighting critical illnesses. When our wish keiki are at their lowest, the promise of a wish come true and the hope for a brighter tomorrow keeps them strong.

Over the years, you have kept this hope alive. You have rallied behind our wish keiki and their families time and again. You’ve donated your time and resources. You’ve shared your heart and aloha. And you’ve continually come together to ensure that keiki on every island battling illness will experience the transformative impact of a wish.

Although life has slowed to a crawl for many of us, critical illnesses continue to take their toll on our wish keiki and their families, who need hope now more than ever. To support our waiting wish keiki during this difficult time, our team is doing all we can to keep their fighting spirits strong—from sharing messages of hope and sending care packages to planning for their wishes come true. Join us in letting these kids know we’re thinking of them and that our community cares. Join us in spreading hope and joy at a time when the world really needs it. We need your support more than ever. Please consider making a gift in any amount today.

Your continued support will allow us to deliver hope to our wish kids, and our entire Hawaii community, at a time when it’s needed the most. Thank you for your consideration of this request, and for keeping the Make-A-Wish Hawaii ‘ohana in your thoughts as we persevere through these unprecedented times.

Stay safe and best wishes,

Trini Kaopuiki Clark
