BRAVE. That’s how one might describe 11-year-old Kaydence of Pahala, Big Island.
Diagnosed at birth with a life-threatening circulatory disease, this brave girl finds hope, strength and joy in the bravery of her favorite Disney character, Merida, of her favorite movie, Brave.
Like her favorite princess, wish kid Kaydence defies all traditional expectations. Despite an antrioventricular block that poses major complications, this pre-teen wished to push the limits and adventure with her family to meet her idol. “It was hard to see her cope with [her condition] at first, but other than her heart condition, she is a very healthy girl and has never let her heart condition stop her from doing anything,” said Kegan, Kaydence’s mom. “We live every day as if her heart condition doesn’t exist.”
Discovering her wish to meet Princess Merida would be coming true, her wish granters organized a surprise party at Punaluu Black Sands beach.
“We were so excited when we heard Make-A-Wish was granting her wish, but the hard part was keeping it a secret.”
Kaydence received a countdown calendar to the day she and her ohana would take off to Florida to meet her favorite princess. When she got to zero, she took off to a once-in-a-lifetime trip that would give the family a sense of love and support to keep them going through Kaydence’s ongoing medical challenges.
“After spending months in a hospital and then get to spend a week at the most magical place on Earth, it’s so nice to know that there are people out there that help to make this once-in-a-lifetime trip happen and we are so thankful and blessed,” said Kegan.
In granting Kaydence’s wish to meet her hero in real life, you gave Kaydence the strength she needs to face the future with unbreakable confidence, and today, she’s stronger than ever.
