Before Jaxston was even born, his mom, Jacquelyn, was told that he had hydrocephalus ventriculomegaly, a rare condition that results in excess fluid in the brain, causing brain damage as well as mental and physical problems. To make matters even more challenging, the doctors diagnosed with him with cerebral palsy soon after birth. The news was heart wrenching. “It was very difficult for me hearing the condition,” remembered Jacquelyn. With most medical facilities located on Oahu, this single mother on Kauai had to deal with the added struggle of flying to another island for certain treatments.
Now 6 years old, Jaxston has settled into his normal routine. Jacquelyn feeds him, cleans him and always makes sure her son is as comfortable as he can be. This was everyday life, until Jaxston was referred for a wish. When his wish granters stepped in to discover what made this little boy’s heart lift with joy, it soon became clear that his family’s love was his greatest treasure.
Although he isn’t able to communicate verbally, Jaxston’s bright eyes and sweet smile say everything he can’t, and nothing gets him more excited than seeing his cousins who live on Maui. He lights up and laughs BIG when he hears their voices. His wish was simple; to enjoy a family reunion full of love and laughter and be surrounded by the electric love of his ohana!
His wish took place just a few islands away from his home in Kaumakani, Kauai. Make-A-Wish Hawaii planned the ultimate family staycation at the beautiful Sheraton Maui Resort: the perfect place to create precious memories together.
“I’ll always remember seeing Jaxston Drai and his cousins having a blast at the Maui Ocean Center and every place we went,” Jacquelyn said. “Jaxston’s favorite part was just being with his cousins experiencing a new place with them, but most importantly, it reminded us to NEVER LOSE HOPE.”
