Living on several acres of land in Hilo on the Big Island, seventeen-year-old Christian has always had endless opportunity for fun in his own backyard. Growing up with three brothers, he was very accustomed to being outside year round and doing normal boy things.
Christian’s life changed when he was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. His energy levels dropped – his body could no longer filter the waste from his blood and his health was a constant concern. It was devastating for Christian – he had always loved helping his brothers take care of their land, the farm and their animals – but it had become too much for his body to handle. He wanted so badly to be outside, next to his family again, hanging out with his brothers. Christian wished to have a new Polaris Ranger Crew cab EPS. If you’ve never heard of a Polaris, as many of our team at Make-A-Wish hadn’t, it is an incredible four-wheel, off-road vehicle.
Life became a little more exciting when Christian was told his wish was being granted. He was allowed to design the Polaris of his dreams, picking the components he most wanted. He phoned the Make-A-Wish offices every two weeks just to check on its progress! This was a terrific and welcome change from the monthly hospital visits he’d been making to Honolulu to treat his illness. Christian had something amazing to look forward to!
Upon hearing of his wish from his wish granting volunteers, the Make-A-Wish Hawaii team paired with Montgomery Powersports Ltd. in downtown Honolulu, who assisted in the special order of Christian’s Polaris from the U.S. Mainland. Soon before the ship arrived on Oahu with the Polaris on board, the graphic designer at Make-A-Wish hand drew and perfected a customized camouflage for it. The distinctive blue camo vehicle wrap was generously donated and installed by Car Wraps Hawaii, and the Polaris was then shipped courtesy of Young Brothers Ltd. from Honolulu to the Big Island.
After months of anticipation, this humble, gentle family pulled up to Montgomery Powersports in Hilo. Christian’s face nearly glowed from the smile on his face, a smile that touched his every facial muscle, as he laid eyes on the Polaris he had dreamed of for so long! This was the first 2015 model to hit the Hawaiian Islands - his very own 4-seat Polaris off-road vehicle covered in a stunning blue camouflage – just sitting there waiting for him to blaze a trail across the yard, over to his grandparents’ house nearby.
Christian was in awe. “I can’t believe this is for us!” he said.
But before he could get behind the wheel, he had to get his safety gear and other fun additions for his new ride. After grabbing gloves and a helmet, Christian thought he was ready to go – but he couldn’t jump in quite yet! He had a lot more to spend in the store! “I can get more!?” he asked excitedly. The answer was YES. It was back into Montgomery Powersports to buy ramps and an assortment of other Polaris accessories.
Finally, it was time for Christian to step into his new Polaris EPS. His smile radiated with excitement as he stepped onto the gas for the first time. He couldn’t wait to take it back to his house where he could really get his gift revving, experience new adventures with his family and take pride in helping to take care of their home. Christian’s Polaris will help him reclaim his freedom and mobility again, enabling him to keep up with his two brothers in a way his illness had prevented him from doing.
“Thank you so much. This is going to change our lives” said Christian’s grandma.
