When Sunrun, Hawaii’s leading residential solar company, heard about Cathryn’s wish, they jumped right in to help.
Cathryn, at only 7-years-old, battles epilepsy, and due to her condition, her body temperature must be monitored closely; getting too hot can trigger her seizures. The solution? Air conditioning. But with the high cost of electricity, Cathryn’s family needed something that they would be able to afford in the long run. That’s when talk of a solar panel system arose and Sunrun stepped in to help grant her wish to live comfortably in her own home.
“Our goal is to save people money and empower them to improve their quality of life while reducing their impact on the environment,” said Blake Briddell, regional market manager of Sunrun.
Since 2009, Sunrun has helped thousands of local families, but for Cathryn's family, Sunrun donated the entire system.
“We were eager to get involved with this project and give back to the community,” continued Blake.
The company installed a photovoltaic system that is customized to meet Cathryn's needs. The new system creates a comfortable living environment for Cathryn while also helping them save for the future.
Immediately after the system was installed, Kimiko, Cathryn’s mom, noticed a difference. “The air quality is 120 percent better and it is so much cooler now,” she said. “The improvements on the house not only make Nao-chan happy, but will also help us better care for her for many years to come.”
Cathryn’s wish brought community partners together for a cause. “It always feels good to know that you are doing the right thing for the planet while also directly improving people's day-to-day lives. We feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to support this wish,” Blake added.
Make-A-Wish Hawaii is extremely grateful for Sunrun’s generosity and is excited to grow this partnership to make more wishes come true for children like Cathryn!
Special thanks to Sunrun and wish granters, Jill Sommer and Lori Anderson.
