At just 3-years-old, Beretta’s bubbly personality fills up any room. And just like any other 3-year-old, she loves arts and crafts, puppies and playing outside. Growing up in Captain Cook on the Big Island, Beretta has a fondness for the outdoors. However, being born with serious congenital heart defect has restricted her from going to parks and playing with other kids as she gets ill very easily. Her grandmother shared that Beretta constantly asks to go on swings and slides and with a heavy heart, her grandmother would have to say no.
When Beretta’s wish granters knocked on her door and asked what her one true wish would be, there was not an ounce of hesitation – Beretta wanted a backyard playset of her very own! She closed her eyes and pictured her dream playset and requested for a swing, slide, climbing wall and a special place where she can sit and create art. “Beretta knew exactly which playset she wanted, from the brand down to the color” said Wish Coordinator, Tati, “She ran outside and fully participated with the team by helping measure out her backyard and preparing it for her dream playset.”
From the day her wish was determined to the second the last bolt was screwed into her playset, Beretta was filled with pure joy. It was crystal clear that this was her one-true-wish. “When I’d call her grandmother, I could hear Beretta in the background asking about her playset,” said Tati, “she kept asking when we were coming and when it would be ready, she was so excited!”
On May 20, 2017, thanks to the incredible Make-A-Wish Hawaii community on Hawaii Island and Home Depot in Hilo, we were able to turn her dreams into a reality! The volunteers spent their entire weekend putting together an incredible playset for Beretta where she can finally play and create without her family having to worry about her becoming ill. “The best part about [Beretta’s] wish day was that she wanted so badly to be part of the building experience,” Tati shared, “She was definitely the project manager of her wish.”
This playset will allow Beretta’s family members near and far to come visit her and play in her backyard, more than a playset, it will be a new gathering place for all the people she loves to come visit and share in her joy. “I’m still blown away every single time I see a wish come true, the power of a wish is a magical thing and it’s amazing seeing how it also transforms the individuals who were part of this experience!”
