Henry Kapono & FRIENDS concert raised $15,000 for local keiki

Make-A-Wish Hawaii President and CEO Siana Austin Hunt gives Wish Teen Moses a high five onstage at the Henry Kapono concert, where he learned his wish was coming true!
Thousands of concert-goers sang along to classic Island tunes under the stars Saturday, Aug. 23 at the summer’s long-awaited Henry Kapono & FRIENDS “Back in the Day” Concert, held at the Waikiki Shell in support of Hawaii Wish Kids.

Henry Kapono teamed up with an incredible lineup of legendary Hawaiian musicians, bringing 15 well-loved Hawaii favorites to the Waikiki Shell stage for one incredible show! Best of all, they opened their hearts to our mission, allowing us to share the spotlight with a full house of attendees who came out to relive the sounds of Hawaii – as it was back in the day.

Proceeds from ticket sales and direct donations collected that evening totaled $15,000.  Thanks to Henry Kapono & FRIENDS and their generosity of spirit, Hawaii kids who are battling life-threatening medical conditions – children like Wahiawa teen Moses - will see their wishes comes true this year. Moses, who is battling Rheumatic Heart Disease, was a teenager in love with sports and an avid football player prior to his diagnosis.  One look at him and you can see how he'd make a formidable athlete!

He had his wish to go to Walt Disney World®granted live in front of the Waikiki Shell audience! Our President and CEO Siana Hunt took the stage in-between sets, where she and Henry surprised Moses and his family with the news! Moses and his family had one week to pack their bags for a Sunday departure courtesy of Alaska Airlines. The crowd rumbled in applause as everyone came together to encourage and support Moses and his family.

Make-A-Wish® Hawaii volunteers, board members and staff were among the crowd, helping to further Share the Power of a Wish®. Act after act, performances by Kalapana, Brother Noland, and Sean Saauao kept the audience energized! Other performers included Jerry Santos of OLOMANA, Willie K John Cruz, Robert Cazimero, Keola Beamer, Amy Hanaialii, Robi Kahakalau, Ledward Kaapana & Mike Kaawa, Cyril Pahinui, and Raiatea.

Henry has proved an amazing Wish Ambassador, assisting with our first annual Radiothon for WISHES this summer.  He helped us spread the word with public service announcements, as well volunteering to answer phones and take pledges from our offices during the June 27 drive.  Henry also wrote a song, “Angel,” inspired by his alignment with our mission. This song, which he played live at the concert, is available for purchase on iTunes. Proceeds from song sales will further benefit our mission.

Special thanks to Henry and his team, as well as those who joined us for an incredible night that will help us bring hope, strength and joy to keiki battling life-threatening medical conditions!
